Bookmarks vs Read Later

Cardmaniacs separates intent:

A documentation page you will revisit for months belongs in Bookmarks. A long article you want to finish this week belongs in Read Later.

Both use the same card, reader, tags, and highlights—only organization and sidebar collections differ.

Adding bookmarks

  • Quick Add (⌘N) — paste URL, choose bookmark destination when prompted
  • Share extension — save from Safari, News, or other apps
  • Save from feeds — palette actions when you want reference, not queue
  • Drag URL — onto Cardmaniacs on macOS where supported

Collections

Bookmarks sidebar destinations include:

  • All bookmarks (folder tree)
  • Starred Bookmarks — palette: Go to Starred Bookmarks
  • Archived Bookmarks — palette: Go to Archived Bookmarks
  • Unread Bookmarks — palette: Go to Unread Bookmarks

User-created folders nest under Bookmarks in the sidebar. Drag cards between folders or use Move… (⌘⇧M).

Starring and tags

  • Toggle Star (⌘⇧S) highlights important bookmarks within a folder
  • Manage Tags… (⌘⇧T) applies cross-library labels—useful for “tools”, “recipes”, “work”

Smart lists can surface bookmarks matching tag and source rules alongside feed and queue items. See Highlights and Tags.

Read states

Bookmarks can be unread (not yet opened in Cardmaniacs) or read. Unread Bookmarks helps you process saved links you have not reviewed in the app—distinct from Read Later’s In Progress.

Mark read with ⌘E when you have reviewed the page in the reader.

Archive and delete

  • Archive (palette) — remove from active folders, recoverable from Archived Bookmarks
  • Delete (⌘⌫) — permanent removal

Prefer archive when unsure.

Opening externally

Open in Browser (⌘⌥O) launches the live site—useful when the bookmarked page changes frequently and reader extraction is not the source of truth.

Copy Link (⌘⇧C) shares the URL without leaving Cardmaniacs.

Capture from other apps

Configure the Share extension under Settings → General. Safari extension actions may offer “bookmark” vs “read later” when saving.

Handoff and Spotlight (see AI and Integrations) can resume bookmarked or recent items across devices.
